If you love Filipino sweet spaghetti then you’ll also love this fun twist on the classic American sloppy joe, made with banana ketchup and hot dogs for that signature Pinoy flavor.

I first learned about sloppy joes as a kid watching It Takes Two in the ’90s. I remember watching the main lead devour it on screen and when we finally made it at home, we couldn’t help but make it our own. We added banana ketchup and hot dogs, just like in Filipino spaghetti. It’s sweet, savory, and a little nostalgic!

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add oil. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up as it browns, for about 5 minutes.

  2. If using hotdogs, add them in and cook until they start to lightly caramelize. Drain excess fat if needed and season with salt and pepper.

  3. Stir in the onion and bell pepper, cooking for another 5 minutes until softened. Add garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, stirring constantly.

  4. In a bowl, whisk together the tomato sauce, banana ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and brown sugar (if using).

  5. Pour the sauce into the beef mixture, bring to a light boil, then reduce heat to low. Simmer uncovered for 10–15 minutes, or until thickened to your liking. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
